A distributor pump head is used to direct the flow of fluid in any type of industrial pump or machine. This type of pump head has a tapered inner wall that is made of cylindrical material, and it has two flat outer walls that taper to a point at the inner edge. The inner wall of the housing has a number of holes or ports that are there to enable the discharge of any kind of fluid as required. There is a port for each and every hole. The large number of ports permits the flow of almost all types of fluid, with the exception of water. All kinds of liquid can be discharged through these ports and hence, the name "Distributor Pump Head".
In order to understand the working of the type of pump head you will require to know a little bit about pressure. Every kind of pump has the characteristic of creating a certain pressure depending upon the amount of pressure that is there in the working chamber. When this pressure is high, the liquid is allowed to move from the lower region into the upper region. This movement of the liquid can be very easily observed with the help of a thermometer. Positive displacement pumps have an inner spring that acts as a pressure absorber and it works by allowing the liquid to be expelled from the upper part while the rotary vane performs the function of pushing the liquid out of the tank or reservoir by means of a rotor. Both these types of pumps have their own advantages and disadvantages, which is why you should learn about them before you start using them.
As discussed earlier, the operation of a pump usually requires the presence of a distributor. If the rotor does not have a good seal, the flow will be diminished. The flow of the fluid is also affected by the design and performance characteristics of the pump itself. A poorly designed pump can experience the phenomenon of "wet fly" wherein the liquid may flow very fast down its discharge line but then drips very slowly on the surface. On the other hand, a pump having good sealing capability can prevent such phenomenon because it can keep the discharge of the fluid at its proper place and speed. However, proper performance of the pump requires that it should have sufficient enough pressure so that it can prevent any occurrence of "wet fly".
